Direction Credits

I have had two opportunities to direct my own writing and have fallen in love with the process…

Now it’s time to tackle something a little more challenging, see my Current Projects page for details about Waiting for Godot!

Forgive me as I lapse into third person bio-speak. It’s how us theatre people learn to write about ourselves.

First production of Dress 2005

First production of Dress 2005

Ben co-wrote and directed Dress! with a friend while he was still in high school. It was the first time he discovered the challenges, and the joys, involved with putting on a show.

Ben, his writing and directing partner, and the entire company, won several awards for this play during the PANTS Drama Festival of 2005. These included an Award of Excellence for writing and directing.

Ben learned a lot about himself along the way, and made a little bit of money for the school’s drama department.

First production of Purgatory 2011

First production of Purgatory 2011

In the summer of 2011 Ben was given the opportunity to direct Purgatory during a one-act festival at Guelph Little Theatre.

It had been a long time since Dress! but the rust fell off quickly. The one-act festival presented a series of challenges, including negotiating with other directors for actors, a very small budget and limited rehearsal space and time (but that’s nothing unique is it?)

The festival was a great success, and Ben was very proud of his cast and crew. The result was spectacular, and he couldn’t have been happier with the experience. Seeing the play on stage shed light on some edits that could improve the script, and after the festival was done it was right back to editing to really streamline the play. Ben hopes to direct it again one day, so that he can see the difference that the changes made.

Recently Purgatory was produced by the Registry Theatre, at their ACTone festival. Ben handed the script over to a different director to see what they made of it, and was pleasantly surprised by the results. Now the script is going through another round of editing, and he hopes to see it produced again in the future.
